McIntosh is the most widely grown apple in New England. Although discovered in 1811, this Canadian apple did not arrive in our area until 1870. Extensive planting of McIntosh occurred after disastrous freezes in 1933/34 killed many popular varieties including Baldwin. We feel New England grows the best McIntosh in the country. Its qualities are so desirable it is the parent of 5 other apple varieties.

Cortland If we were forced to grow only one variety, this would be it. Developed early in the 20th century, it is a cross between McIntosh & Ben Davis, capturing the most desirable traits of both varieties. The best cooking apple among presently grown varieties, it is also well received for eating. Its keeping qualities are the best of apples currently produced.
